"Advancing Leadership in Health Research, Education, and Disease Surveillance"
Kazakhstan
Not even 36 hours of torrential rain from Tropical Storm Debby could deter this group of Kazakh public health officials, researchers, and epidemiologists from an outstanding program in Tampa Bay! They even managed a "Sunrise Sail" (their Sunset Sail the previous evening was cancelled due to lightning!) and a World Partnerships "Dinner Diplomacy" reception with the Thrive DTSP community (sponsored by a grant from Global Ties U.S. and Marriott International).
Thanks to Baycare St. Anthony's Hospital, the Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County, USF Health, USF College of Public Health, and Tampa General Hospital for their commitment to making this a valuable and memorable program.
Thanks to Baycare St. Anthony's Hospital, the Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County, USF Health, USF College of Public Health, and Tampa General Hospital for their commitment to making this a valuable and memorable program.
Mr. Scott Smith, President of Baycare St. Anthony's Hospital, brought together his senior care team for a discussion and exploration of the "applied level of healthcare" when infection prevention protocols, tracking and accountability are implemented at a major hospital. The Kazakh group was also able to visit St. Anthony's state-of-the-art "glass-walled" surgery centers, new emergency department, isolation rooms, and the in-house laboratory. Dr. Ulyee Choe, DO, Director, Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County, provided an in-depth look at how a county health department and community partners interact with the state and Federal governments in tracking public health challenges and outcomes. At the University of South Florida, the group visited the Center for Global Health and Inter-Disciplinary Research (GHIDR), which works to improve the health and lives of people afflicted by infectious diseases through the development of improved diagnostics, treatments and preventive mechanisms. Dr. Lynette Menezes, Assistant VP International for USF Health and her team engaged on the subject of international education, exchange and research collaboration from the perspective of a Research 1 University and a top College of Public Health. Dr. Jay Wolfson, interim dean of the College of Public Health, discussed health care law, ethics in public policy and technology in a lively Q&A with the Kazakh professionals.
The group then visited Tampa General Hospital, the region's first and only Level 1 Trauma Center and it's largest teaching hospital, where Dr. John Sinnott, M.D., James Cullison MD Professorship in Medicine, Internal Medicine, Morsani College of Medicine, University of South Florida opened their discussion about future directions in medicine and the value of international collaboration. Dr. Kami Kim, Division Director of International Medicine at the USF Morsani College of Medicine detailed the work she and her team carried at during the COVID-10 pandemic through her Global Emerging Diseases Institute. Dr. Beata Casanas, and internationally-recognized expert in infectious diseases talked about her work as a public health coordinator for the Hillsborough County Health Department. Ms. Tiffany Vasey discussed how to set up a rapid treatment center for contagious diseases. Ms. Kimberly Atrubin, director of TGH Infection Prevention, detailed the hospital's approach to prevention the introduction and spread of infection at a major hospital. And Dr. Jacqueline Sherbuk discussed her work on HIV and STI prevention. |
