Nigeria "Promoting Good Governance and Accountability in the U.S. – The Role of Journalists" Senior journalists and editors from Nigeria came to Tampa Bay to exchange experiences and best practices with their peers at the Tampa Bay Times, the Poynter Institute, Times Columnist William Maxwell, WMNF Community Radio, and the Public Information Office of the St. Petersburg Police Department. Dr. LaDonna Butler hosted home hospitality at the Dr. Carter G. Woodson Museum of African-American History, where the group enjoyed a "family dinner" with Ms. Teri Scott and the Board of the Woodson Museum, and learned about the rich African-American history on "The Deuces" in St. Petersburg. |

Azerbaijan "Media Literacy and Combating Disinformation" Phil Ammann of FloridaPolitics.com gave an outstanding overview of Florida's open records laws, and discussed the ability of Florida journalists to cover local news quickly and effectively because of open and mandatory access to primary sources. The Azerbaijani journalists visited the Poynter Institute's International Fact Checking Network, Nielsen Global Technology and Innovation Center, First Amendment and open records laws expert Alison Steele, and WMNF-FM Community Radio. |

Western Hemisphere Regional Project "Countering Disinformation and Digital Literacy" Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Uruguay Our Western Hemisphere journalists met with Juan Carlos Chavez of the Tampa Bay Times and Centro Tampa to discuss the problem of fake news and its remedies. The Poynter Institute hosted them for a full day symposium on the subject, including the opportunity to interact with PolitiFact, the nation's first on-line fact-checking website and winner of the Pulitzer Prize. Kosovo "Reporting on Religion" Emphasizing techniques and strategies for reporting on religious issues in a multicultural community, these Kosovar journalists exchanged ideas with journalism and ethics experts, and student groups in Tampa Bay, including: Kelly McBride at the Poynter Institute; Rob Lorei, WMNF-FM Community Radio; Rev. Kenny Irby, Community Intervention Director, St. Petersburg Police Department (and a former journalist); and the University of Tampa "Better Together" student ecumenical program. African Continent Regional Project "Integrity in Journalism - New Media and Civic Engagement" Algeria, Central African Republic, Comoros, France, Ghana, Haiti, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Tunisia, Zimbabwe These 14 journalists from the African continent took part in a full-day workshop at the Poynter Institute, and later met with Tampa Bay Times award-winning syndicated columnist William Maxwell. In commemoration of the Veterans Day centennial, they took part in a groundbreaking ceremony for "Rise St. Pete", a monument and park dedicated in tribute to resiliency of the American spirit in the wake of 9/11. The monument features a steel beam found in the ruins of the World Trade Center in New York, and given to the founders of the American Freedom Distillery in St. Pete. The founders are all retired Green Berets, the "Horse Soldiers" who led the American response in Afghanistan shortly after 9/11. The monument and park are located in St. Petersburg's Warehouse Arts District. So many thanks to our friends at #AmericanFreedomDistillery and #RememberHonorSupport for welcoming our African journalists to this very memorable groundbreaking. |

Bosnia and Herzegovina "Investigative Journalism" Seasoned investigative journalists met with their counterparts throughout Tampa Bay, including a half-day workshop at the Poynter Institute; Mark Douglas, WFLA-8 investigative reporter; Phil Ammann of FloridaPolitics.com; and Howard Altman, Tampa Bay Times defense reporter. John Hopkins Middle School's "Journeys in Journalism" student reporters interviewed the group for the award-winning "JHOP Times". |

Oman "Combating Human Trafficking" This group of senior policy and judicial officials from Oman met with outstanding experts in the field of combating human trafficking. Meetings included: The St. Petersburg Police Department, with talks by Chief Anthony Holloway and General Counsel Sasha Lohn, and members of the SPPD Human Trafficking Task Force; Todd Kirchgraber, Training Manager, Center for Human Trafficking Awareness at St. Petersburg College's Allstate Center; Port Tampa Bay CEO Paul Anderson and Vice President for Security Mark Dubina; Reverend Kathleen Dain, Executive Director, Beth-El Farm Ministry; Professor Luz Nagle, Stetson University College of Law; and executives from victim advocacy organization More Too Life. |
