"Hidden No More"
Empowering Women Leaders in STEM

Armenia, Dominican Republic, Kyrgyz Republic, Mexico, Philippines, Tunisia & Zambia

Picture
STEM students at Richard O. Jacobsen Technical High School in Pinellas County celebrate a dynamic, inspirational interchange with Hidden No More women leaders.

Inspired by screenings of the award-winning film Hidden Figures at more than 120 U.S. Embassies and Consulates worldwide, this special initiative program began in 2017 to highlight and develop the important contributions of women and girls in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). “Hidden No More” brings to the United States 50 women from around the world who have excelled in STEM careers such as spacecraft engineering, data solutions and data privacy, and STEM-related education. World Partnerships first hosted this distinguished program in 2019.

This project examines women’s contributions to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) through research and development, education and teaching, leadership, and public policy formation.  Participants explored best practices in the effective recruitment, training, and development of women and other underrepresented groups in STEM and learn how they can institutionalize opportunities for women in their own countries.  This project supports the Department’s strategic goal of enhancing economic growth through the contributions of women.  The project focuses on the advances of women’s employment in STEM fields and addresses how they are mentoring the next generation.

Highlights of the program in Tampa Bay included:
  • Interaction with and inspiring STEM faculty and students in classrooms at Jacobson Technical High School, Seminole High School, and Azalea Middle School.
  • A Foundation Lab at the Salvador Dali Museum, exploring how Dali's art challenges our concepts of the possible and the impossible, and changes our perspectives of the world around us.
  • Exploring the Bay at the USF Oceanography Camp for Girls, and talking with alumni inspired to became ocean scientists.
  • Experiments with brain wave technology and "visiting" the International Space Station at the Innovation Lab, St. Petersburg College.
  • Testing for microplastics in Tampa Bay water at the SPC Bay Pines STEM Lab.
  • Participating in a "community conversation" panel at USF St. Petersburg Campus, hosted by USFSP Student Government.
  • Taking a Halloween "Ghost Tour" in downtown St. Pete.
  • Sailing into a Gulf of Mexico sunset.
  • Visiting an array of museums in St. Pete.
