"Building Resilience to Environmental Challenges and Preparing for Disasters" A Regional Project for the Western Hemisphere Bolivia, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Peru Dr. Steven Murawski, a fisheries biologist and marine ecology professor at the USF College of Marine Science, serves as Director and Principal Investigator for the Center for Ocean Mapping and Innovative Technologies (COMIT), a cooperative agreement between the NOAA Office of Coast Survey and USF to develop technologies to map undersea ocean and coastal regions. Dr. Murawski gave an overview of "lessons learned" from three iconic oil spills, and discussed current scientific monitoring of the Piney Point leak of polluted waste into Tampa Bay. |

"Conservation and Biodiversity" People's Republic of China World Partnerships IVLP alumnus from South Africa, Julian Rademeyer, Director, Organised Crime Observatory (East & Southern Africa) of the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime discussed a new initiative entitled "Wildlife Trafficking and Criminal Convergence", including illegal trafficking in abalone, elephant ivory, and rhino horn. His conversation emphasized the relationship between crime and conservation, and the need for continued cooperation across borders, information sharing, and community security and benefits of cooperation. |

A key element of the Department's community policing initiatives, these programs bring together police officers, faith leaders, youth leaders, schools, neighborhood associations, and other civil society organizations to address the needs of underserved and at-risk youth. Programs include "Men and Women in the Making", teaching life skills, the Police Athletic League, mobile community resources, and Feeding Tampa Bay (among others) |

"U.S. Foreign Policy Decision Making" An Inter-Regional Project Bahrain, Cambodia, Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Japan, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mongolia, Morocco, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, Vietnam World Partnerships was asked to address international trade as a component of US foreign policy. Matthew Nolan, Partner, Arent Fox LLP (Washington, DC), a respected international trade lawyer with decades of experience advising public and private sector clients, engaged this group with an overview of how US trade policy is made, how it works, who influences it, and how it relates to US foreign policy. He contrasted the trade policies of the present and past US administrations as case studies in how foreign markets can manage their trade relationships with the US. Gary Springer, President of World Partnerships, who has also advised international clients on trade policy and trade disputes during his career, moderated and contributed to the lively discussion. Matthew Nolan also serves as Chair of the World Partnerships Board of Trustees. |

"Best Practices in U.S. Energy Infrastructure, Planning, and Execution" Pakistan Mr. Peter Keller, Managing Director, Energy & Climate, Berkeley Research Group LLC (New York), is an experienced energy professional who has been involved in oil and gas finance since 1978 and utility/power finance since 2003. He has a deep background in transaction negotiation, origination, and structuring in both the institutional and corporate banking sectors. In the context of climate change reality, Peter led a spirited discussion on the legacy grid of the US, and the current evolution toward a more sustainable, more robust, and more resilient micro-grid model, public/private partnerships, and the importance of stability in multi-year frameworks as new technology is developed and deployed in the power sector. |

"Promoting Tourism to Historic Religious Sites" Pakistan Mr. Faizan Ali, Ph.D. presented research on global and regional flows of tourism to highlight the impact of this industry on global and national GDP. He then brought the discussion to the state of the tourism industry in Pakistan, proposing that improvement of industry data in the country would be a vital first step. He presented case examples of countries that have successfully built tourism and hospitality industries focused on religious sites, heritage programs, and history and culture, and the impact on their surrounding communities and regions. His insights and commentary engendered a spirited dialogue with the Pakistani tourism professionals. Dr. Ali is an Assistant Professor, Graduate Program, Master of Science in Hospitality, School of Hospitality and Tourism Management Coordinator, Muma College of Business at the University of South Florida. His research interests are in the areas of customer experience, service performance and quality, customer satisfaction and behavior and he has authored more than 40 internationally refereed journal articles and conference papers. Ali serves as the coordinating editor for the International Journal of Hospitality Management and as an assistant editor for the International Interdisciplinary Business Advancement Journal. He also serves on the editorial boards of various journals. |
