May 6 & 7: Cultural Activities in Tampa Bay!
After a night on the town to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, the Tampa Bay Rays hosted the entire delegation at Tropicana Field for a Saturday afternoon Major League Baseball game between the hometown Rays and their archrival New York Yankees. For most of the visitors, this was their first time a) to see a baseball game, and b) to see a major sporting event indoors under a dome with air-conditioning! They had the complete baseball experience, eating the requisite hot dogs and popcorn, seeing and hearing the crowd reactions to great plays, dodging a foul ball in the upper decks (on the game’s third pitch!) and witnessing “the Wave”. Thanks are owed to the International Liaison team for explaining what was going on (in at least 3 languages) and to one of our European visitors who fell in love with the game when he was young, and was delighted to explain to his colleagues what was going on!

Early Sunday morning, the group arrived at Fort DeSoto County Park, a treasured barrier island beach often voted as the best beach in America! Co-sponsored by the St. Petersburg Police Department, World Partnership and its intrepid volunteer Trustees and friends cooked burgers and hot dogs for 110 attendees. Rev. Kenneth Irby, SPPD Community Intervention Director, organized volunteers from his church community and from one of his community engagement youth programs, “Men In The Making” to join the cookout and bolster the volunteer corps for the beach clean-up. Park Manager David Harshbarger talked about the history and evolution of the park, and organized a massive beach clean-up volunteer activity. Great food, great fellowship, and a great day at the beach!
We thank our visitors for their gift of a cleaner beach to our community! |
