Tuesday, May 9: US Military Combatant Commands Briefing on Countering Transnational Threats

The "Towards a More Safe and Secure World" workshops continued in the City of Tampa at Hillsborough Community College with a warm and welcoming message from Paige Niehaus, Ed.D., President of HCC Dale Mabry Campus.

Mr. Michael P. Pignatello, Department of State Liaison Officer, Office of the Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs / Community Engagement opened the day’s session explaining the US Department of Defense Combatant Commands. Thank you to Ms. Carrie Flinchbaugh, Acting Senior Foreign Policy Advisor (POLAD) at Headquarters, US Special Operations Command who introduced Vice Admiral Collin Green, Deputy Commander, US Special Operations Command.

VADM Green provided the visitors with an exceptional presentation and Q&A on the vital importance of “Connecting, Collaborating, Educating, and Engaging” and the "power of persistent partnership operations between like-minded partners". He also emphasized the value of creating a “candid culture” that listens more than talks, and discussed leadership qualities needed to combat transnational threats.

A high-level panel comprised of US Central Command senior civilian advisors and organized by Ms. Heather G. Eaton, Deputy Policy Advisor (POLAD), United States Central Command to the stage for an in-depth discussion of the role of civilian Federal inter-agency task forces within the combatant commands for “whole of government” collaboration and information-sharing. Distinguished speakers and panelists included:
  • Mr. Robert Unger (SES), Director, Resources and Analysis, USCENTCOM, and Senior Advisor to the Commander
  • Mr. David C. Jennen, Chief, Interagency Coordination and Targeting Division Iran/Strategic Competition Branch, USCENTCOM (Moderator)
  • Mr. Scott Francis, Homeland Security Investigations’ (HSI) Senior Liaison Officer to USCENTCOM
  • Mr. Dale Price, USCENTCOM Liaison, Customs & Border Patrol (CBP), US Department of Homeland Security
  • Supervisory Special Agent Louis J. Ryckeley, Drug Enforcement Administration (US Department of Justice) Liaison Officer USCENTCOM
  • Mr. Thomas Mund, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Liaison, USCENTCOM

Thanks to Michael Pignatello, Carrie Flinchbaugh, and Heather Eaton for their collaboration on making this a highly-valuable session for the TMSSW visitors.
